Special Spectators – FSN Coverage bcrockwell 4 min – May 21, 2007 Special Spectators, a Chicago-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, creates magical days for seriously ill children and their parents at collegiate sporting events across the United States. Since 2002, we’ve provided the quintessential Saturday experience complete with tailgate parties, mascots, cheerleaders and marching bands for approximately 3,800 children and parents. Over the last five years, we’ve hosted about 110 game day events that provide these kids with special access to people and areas of the stadium that are not accessible to most fans. Our youngsters tour locker rooms, meet coaches and walk on the field during a time out. The field visit is a powerful moment. While the kids stand on the field, a stadium announcement tells fans why the kids are attending the game, explains Special Spectators and asks the crowd to give the children a warm welcome to the stadium. Typically this results in a standing ovation. Special Spectators also coordinates student-athlete visits to children’s hospitals. What we see during these visits is that a mutual admiration society is created. Clearly, these children view the athletes as heroes and the reverse is true as well. The athletes see what the children experience and more importantly, they are able to see the impact that they, as individuals, have on the children. This plants the seed of the gift of giving in the heart of the student athlete and, we believe, creates a commitment to service that extends into the future. The idea for Special Spectators was originally formed out of participation in Landmark Education’s Self Expression and Leadership Program (SELP). is dedicated to making a difference for the worlds most needy and vulnerable children. Around the world natural disasters, civil strife, war, and genocide have had a devastating impact on millions of children. The very people who face the greatest impact of these events are also the ones that are the most often forgotten. With a need so great, the goal of Cherish Our Children International is to fund, develop, pilot, and replicate local initiatives to serve these children.

In 1993, Juli Kamin (now Juli Hall) of Houston, Texas was moved to ease the plight of Romanian orphans abandoned after the fall of the brutal Ceausescu regime. She established Cherish Our Children International (COCI) as a non-profit organization to sponsor and implement model programs that now benefit thousands of children around the world., Cherish Our Children International has been working for children in Romania, Serbia, Kenya, Israel, Mexico and the United States.

Because of COCI’s support and initiatives; HIV positive children in Romania receive job training, health education, food and medicine; abandoned children in Serbian orphanages are tutored, allowing them to be mainstreamed in public school classes where they have all received passing grades, some excelling with honors. In Kenya, COCI supports a day care/residential center servicing 70 children from the Kisumu slums, and ten resident children. In Israel, Cherish Our Children supports a soccer program that acts as a bridge between Jewish and Arab children. In Mexico COCI providing healthy water and in the United States, COCI is supporting a program to support the education of children with incarcerated parents.

Some of the past accomplishments of COCI include:
